DIY (Do It Yourself) De-commissioning and Recycling for Your IBM 3745 FEP.

If you operate a busy data center, you may wish to choose Mid-Atlantic and its skilled, experienced staff to de-commission your IBM 3745 or 3746 FEP.  We provide a valuable convenience for you in handling the many tasks associated with de-installing, packing, removing, de-manufacturing and recycling your equipment.

While we don't recommend it, you may choose to take care of the 3745/3746 de-commissioning tasks yourself.  If you choose to do the job yourself, be cautious in your choice of a recycler.  If you contact us we'll put you in touch with one who has invested in the equipment and staff to responsibly handle your equipment.  Above all, please ensure that the recycling is  completed properly.  Before you pack up and ship your equipment, here are some helpful items for you:

De-installation:  Mid-Atlantic can provide hardware de-installation service for your IBM 3745/3746 equipment on a fee basis.  Simply contact us for a quotation. 

We don't recommend that you perform the de-installation unless your personnel have had 3745/3746 product safety and service training by IBM or by Mid-Atlantic.  If they have had training, read through your 3745/3746 service documentation for details, but a simplified and partial list of actions includes:

  1. Acquire packing materials before de-installation date.

  2. Provide weight and dimensions to carrier.

  3. Schedule freight-out with carrier.

  4. Select responsible recycler - make arrangements for delivery and documentation.

  5. Schedule de-manufacturing and processing with recycler.

  6. Schedule 3745/3746 de-installation according to local change management plan.

  7. Remove 3745 from production per change plan.

  8. Drop PDU circuit power according to local convention and per change plan.

  9. Remove property management tags and company identification tags. Leave with responsible manager.

  10. Remove frame grounding plates. Pack.

  11. Disconnect and drop external cables - channel., LAN, high and low speed LICs, ARCs. Leave under floor or pack according to change plan.

  12. Disconnect and pack service LAN components, Service Processor, Network Node Processor.

  13. Extract inter-frame service LAN cabling.  Pack.

  14. Remove 3745 battery and return to IBM, using return packing materials.

  15. Gather and pack the ship group tools and wraps.

  16. Remove end covers and select covers and inside panels.

  17. Disconnect inter-frame signal cabling.  Pack or secure in frame.

  18. Disconnect inter-frame power distribution cabling. Pack or secure in frame.

  19. Remove inter-frame fasteners. Pack.

  20. Remove pedestal feet and risers.  Pack.

  21. Identify equipment under-floor power feeders.

  22. Disconnect under-floor power cords from receptacles/in-line connectors.

  23. Pull under-floor power feeders into frames. Secure for transit.

  24. Install and secure internal panels.

  25. Install and secure external covers.

  26. Release wheel locks.

  27. Move frames away from installation position

  28. Replace floor cuts with full tiles or airflow tiles per change plan.

  29. Test movement of frames for locked wheels, dragging, floor damage.

  30. Pack frames using packing material kit.

  31. Move frames and packing cartons to staging area.

Removal and Freight-out:  There are many freight agents and carriers from which to choose.  Mid-Atlantic has long-standing business relationships with several agents who consistently provide superior service and who understand the special requirements for moving this type of equipment.  A good agent communicates with you from start to finish, all the while checking on arrangements with local crews.  This can mean the difference between having the right equipment and crew on the planned removal date or in having to reschedule removal.

When making arrangements with your carrier for removal, it's best to arrange for an inside pickup and a crew of two.  Otherwise your carrier will expect to pickup at your loading dock and may arrive with a driver only (no helper).  If you don't have a loading dock or if your site cannot be accessed by a full-sized tractor trailer rig, your carrier should be informed. There will be an additional charge for use of a straight truck or lift gate.  For shipment, the IBM 3745/3746 equipment can be loaded on wheels or it can be palletized, and the freight rate will differ.

The IBM 3745/3746 equipment is large and heavy so special consideration should be given to removal from your data center.  Some flooring materials (marble, carpeting) can be damaged during removal unless your carrier is equipped with tempered masonite or plywood sheets.  Often, traversing elevator and doorway thresholds will require flat steel sheets, an item that not every truck routinely carries.  The removal crew needs to be shown the full removal path before starting - be certain to advise the crew of the sensitivity of other equipment along the removal path.  Often the large frames, which are on 3 inch wheels, have a tendency to pull in one direction or another.  There is the potential for collision with operating equipment or walls if the crew is caught off-guard.  If improperly de-installed, 3745 frame wheels can lock in one direction, causing floor damage or collision. Some frames have fixed casters on one side, so the frame can be moved only in two directions.  Others have swivel wheels on each corner, allowing movement in any direction. It's important for your removal crew to know which type of frame they are moving.

De-manufacturing and Recycling:  Expect to pay for recycling your IBM 3745/3746. The de-manufacturing process for IBM 3745/3746 equipment is labor-intensive and it's prerequisite to responsible recycling.  Mid-Atlantic technicians know from their refurbishment work that there are thousands of individual parts in a 3745/3746 subsystem and there's no automated method for disassembly.  When selecting a recycler, make certain that the recycler is aware of the physical characteristics of this equipment.  Sending photographs with external covers on and off may help. If the recycler is not informed, there is a potential for misunderstanding and for unexpected recycling fees.

Criteria for selection of a responsible recycler touch on social, moral and legal issues beyond the scope of this notice, but you should be aware that there are some very good recyclers and there are some very bad recyclers.   The good ones often charge for recycling services.  If you've had your recycling done in the past for no-cost or if you have perhaps even been paid a nominal amount for your equipment, there's a chance that your recycler has not invested in the equipment, facilities and personnel necessary for best-practice recycling.   For your own protection and for your company's protection, you should be cautious and diligent in the selection.  You will wish to avoid any recycler that does not have the processes and equipment to de-manufacture and recycle your equipment without subcontracting or selling to downstream processors.
